Katie Lee is the latest Black Sheep ambassador to liven up our We Ride the World Ride Guide Series, enlightening us with a dive into the Sydney cycling scene and its somewhat surprisingly attractive riding grounds. When we think of Sydney, we think big smoke, busy roads and beaches. But as it turns out, there’s actually a whole lot to offer for the outdoor enthusiast and two-wheeled obsessed.
Escape the city mayhem and the adventures begin. From short punchy hills, to long scenic climbs. Through National Parks, to picture-perfect beaches. Skinny tyres, or fat – there’s roads and trails for every occasion, catering to cyclists of all levels. There’s rarely a dull day in Sydney and the mostly decent weather makes saddling up year-round enjoyable. The perks don’t end there, as Sydney offers an endless array of alluring cafes, bakeries, pubs and bars that can promptly turn any ride – good or bad, into a bloody great one. Sydney, we think we’ve fallen for you and will happily be heading your way to rock your roads pronto. Ride The World with us, like a local.

If you’re hankering for a longer ride with a mix of testing climbs, sweeping descents and some flat sections in between to give it a nudge, 3 Gorges has your name written all over it.
Start your day out with a cruise along the Pacific Highway, where you’ll gradually rise for 30 minutes or so before taking in your first descent of the day. Enjoy it while it lasts, as from there the climbs roll in hot as you make your way to Galston Gorge, followed by Berowra and finally Bobbin Head. From gorge to gorge, find the time to soak up the stunning scenery on display. The perfect pain masker to see you through the day. All smiles as you float your way back into the city to round out a solid day on tap. If you’re feeling fly, extend your ride through to Chatwoods to devour a doughnut or two at one of my faves, Shortstop. Because hey – you deserve it. Pro tip: If you’re riding this route in winter, be sure to dress appropriately as she can get a little chilly up in the hills. We’re talking Elements LS jersey, warmers and gloves. You know the drill.

Ettalong is a ride that stands true to its name. It’s long and made for the endurance kings and queens who are up for a big day out on the bike. Straight into business, the route travels into the hills North of Sydney. At the 40km mark, the HR will step up a notch as you run into some real climbing. Embrace the suffering. It won’t last too long. At Mooney Mooney Creek, the fun and games continue as you roll into your next ascent. Persevere and grind it out to the top as it’s mostly smooth sailing from there. Take a breather, then glide on down to the coast where you’ll be greeted to pleasant sea views and an endless, mostly flat stretch of coastline on route back to Sydney. At 35km to go, you’ll hop aboard the ferry from Ettalong to Palm Beach, which takes in the Central Coast and Northern Beaches. Not a bad way to reset, refuel and enjoy some serenity before tackling the final hurdle home. If your body’s crying out for some lovin’ and your fridge contents at home doesn’t appeal, then make a pitstop at Sticky Bottle in Brookvale for a highly appetising ‘almost’ post-ride feed. If I were you, I’d opt for the truffled mushroom jaffle. It’s a win every damn time. *Ferry Timetable

Akuna Bay is my top pick for a decent weekend adventure, including two climbs to put your legs to the test and earn those Saturday night bevvies. Once you’re off the busier roads of the Northern Beaches, you will head into the Ku-Ring Gai National Park where photo ops are plentiful. Make an obligatory stop at the water’s edge to snap that perfect selfie and slap it into your memory books for later appreciation. If time allows and you’re feeling like a little pick-me-up to get you home, there are some reputable coffee stops along the route at Church Point and Tempo Café, at the top of Mccarrs Creek Rd. Bircher Muesli all the way. This ride also has the option to quickly turn your 75km outing into a century, by venturing further into the National Park out to West Head and back. Some would say, worth it for the views and those extra ks. As who doesn’t love those solid hundy feels.

If you’re ready to mix it up and feeling the coastal vibes, then head south of the Sydney Harbour Bridge towards the Eastern Beaches. Prepare to be mesmerised as you cruise along the dreamy coastline and pass beach after beach, including the iconic Bondi, beckoning you to stop off for a pic or a dip. Although there are no ‘climbs’ as such, don’t forget your climbing legs as you’ll encounter plenty of short, pinches along the way. The type that burn but are over within the blink of an eye if you tackle them right. As you cruise your way into La Perouse, you’ll be treated to exceptional views of the beautiful Botany Bay. Take it all in as you go. And whatever you do, don’t forget to stop at Huxtons in Bronte for a great brew and sweet treat. Coffee and the coast. They just go together.

If smashing yourself on steep hills is your vibe – Mosman is the place to do it. It’s the perfect option for a swift morning midweek ride, with a healthy dose of elevation. Enough to get your sweat on, give your legs a thrashing and start your day buzzing. Bonus – it features some pretty incredible views of the Sydney Harbour to make that early rise all the more worth your while.
If you shot out the door in a flash and are after a necessary caffeine fix, there are a number of cracking coffee stop options along the route. My favourites are; Berkelo Mosman, At Neutral and Against The Grind. Alternatively, if you’re an evening exerciser, finish up with a post-ride beer at The Buena.
*Word of warning – watch out for the bush turkeys!
