Black Sheep started as a passion project to create cycling garments that were an expression of self. To change an industry that had become tired, boring and self-congratulatory. And let's be honest, a little bit wanky. Our dream was to embrace everyone and, with our impending global expansion, we’re truly ready to fulfil that ambition. To break down the stigmas that exist in the sport we love and invite all-comers from all corners of the world to experience the joy of riding regardless of age, ability, gender or race.
Black Sheep, co-founded by former professional athlete John Polson, has been embraced by a global community of like-minded cyclists and the next obvious step was to give back to those who share our ethos for the sport of cycling and embody what it means to be a Black Sheep.
So, following in the footsteps of our very first flagship store in Seoul, Korea, we're proud to announce both a worldwide expansion and the opening of The Woolshed, in a – yes, you guessed it – former wool store warehouse located in Teneriffe, Brisbane.
"Like many parts of the world, Brisbane has embraced Black Sheep since the beginning and so, too, have we have embraced this beautiful cycling city," says Managing Director, Polson. "The Woolshed has been our HQ for over two years. A creative hub where every garment is designed. And where, until recently, every piece of apparel was dispatched. It's always been our goal to open the space up to everyone. To have a home for our worldwide community and open a physical retail space which complements the brand."
"Ours is a growing brand and community," says creative director, Nik Howe. "We're as excited by creating global hubs as we are this expansion. For us, it was about reinterpreting our brand in a new setting and allowing the shop to blend seamlessly into the neighbourhood it calls home. A place for everyone. Black Sheep is inclusive. We want The Woolshed and our worldwide satellites to reflect that same ethos."
To coincide with putting down roots and opening The Woolshed, we are also bubbling with enthusiasm about the global expansion of Racing Club, which, until now, has been an initiative solely based in Brisbane, but will extend to six satellite locations around the world – Melbourne, London, Seoul, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Medellín. And online for those not based near those cities. We may not have clubhouses in each of those locations. Or free coffee. But we do have incredible communities and trusted Authorised Dealers which embody what Racing Club stands for.
Racing Club, launched in Brissie in 2016, is and always will be a club without the old school stereotypes and social hangups. A place to connect with like-minded people. Whether you’re gearing up for your first crit, are a wannabe A-grader or just want to ride your bike recreationally, Racing Club is your club. It bridges the physical with the digital, utilising platforms such as Facebook, Strava and Zwift, and a number of events, open to our worldwide community, are already planned in real life and online. Our home is your home. Wherever you are in the world. And we can’t wait to ride with you.
