When it came to organising We Ride the World, Singapore was the first stop on the list. One of the regions around the world that was first to embrace the Black Sheep way of life, we try to get to this beautiful country and city whenever we can. Led by expat turned local Scott Bales, a hundred or so cyclists set off into the heat of a Singaporean Sunday. Destination, the massive climb of Prince George and NUS Slope. All 60 vertical metres of them!
A literal hop, skip and jump from Singapore is the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur. In what was a massive weekend of We Ride festivities, we finished the weekend with We Ride KL. We have to say a huge thank you to the man, Jeff Liew. Jeff and his team at The Bike Artisans have been massive supporters of Black Sheep for so long. He didn't disappoint this weekend. A peloton of 80 plus ventured into what has become our favourite KL ride; a 15-kilometre climb through the Genting Sempah rainforest. It is spectacular, with a descent to rival many of the greats from around the world. We finished off the morning with a Satay Party back at The Bike Artisans, and a few swapped stories of close calls with local dogs and monkeys! – John Polson
Greeted by probably the happiest cyclists I’ve ever encountered at a pre-dawn ride, our bunch size was significant for We Ride Bangkok. Two 45-50 kilo female cyclists navigated the group safely out of the hustle and bustle of this crazy city. From busy main roads to hook turns under bridges all while dodging potholes that you could get lost in.
Then, out the corner of my eye, light blue and purple laneways absorbed by cyclists merge into sight – welcome to Skylane, this purpose-built 23.5 km bike path is a cyclists playground, attracting over 10,000 cyclists a day. It's the safest and closet cycling in Bangkok. So naturally, we take in a few laps before rolling back into town in search of Iced long blacks and air con. – Craig Mackie
Something special happened in Seoul earlier this year. No, it wasn't that hug between Kim Jong-un and Moon Jae-In, but hey, we were still punching the air. In May we launched our very first flagship store in Korea. A country that has always treated us so well. It was only fitting that come We Ride Seoul, it was an incredible celebration. Off into the hills, and to the beautiful little town of Sanseong. There was a tone of laughs and tired legs. A special thanks to our team in Korea. You truly are awesome people! – John Polson
There's a reason Girona is the home of cycling and the back yard for half the pro peloton. Great weather, quiet roads and varied terrain to suit everybody. We were joined at our friends, Eat Sleep Cycle, by some 40 people from all over the world for a classic 70km local loop. In true Girona style, there was a mix of pros, retired pros, locals and visitors keen for an adventure led by local boy, Miqui Sureda.
We headed out of the old town to the Stick Farm before finding the quiet deserted back roads to the historical town of Monells. A quick stop for a much-needed coffee before we tackled the famous climb of Santa Pellaia. It was then time to descend back into Girona for post-ride refreshments. Chilled glasses of Clara (a Spanish take on shandy), a favourite of the locals and one of the many reasons first time visitors start planning their return to this ancient Medieval city. — Dan Smith.
Meeting at a carpark 4km outside Adelaide's CBD, I'm running a little late as I'm unsure how many layers to put on for this fresh winter start. Navigating my way through open roads, I look up to see groups of cyclists talking amongst themselves, guys and gals huddling together eager to start.
As the bunch of 60 progress up a slight incline everyone finding their position, the bunch seems to align like trusted training buddies. Breathing becomes deeper as our ascent becomes challenging. Where else in the world can you be 15 minutes outside of the CBD with roads to yourself and perfect climbs.
As the hills pass quickly, greenery soon turns to coastline and your hit like a Fisherman's Friend in the face as the coast air awakens all the senses. Smiles all round and friendly banter as we roll turns giving everyone the opportunity to talk and get to know someone new. After a few hours of riding, we're back into town to consume fresh ground coffee, kindly provided by our friends at Cycle Closet.
Brisbane... you are the greatest. We are not saying we don't love everyone else, but as those corny Qantas ads with 'homesick Jim' suggest, nothing feels like home. Our return to Brisbane was a way better welcome home than our parents or better-halves normally give us. 100 plus came out, on Father's Day of all days. We had the world's cutest coffee van serving up some of 'nature's finest' before we embarked on 60kms in and out of the burbs. It was a ride filled with smiles, laughs, and just great conversations. Well, maybe not as everyone crested Gap Creek Road, but that pain was short lived. We ended where we started, at our HQ in Teneriffe, and in the blasting winter sunshine that only Queensland can truly serve up. Thank you, Brisbane. We absolutely adore you! – John Polson
THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO TOOK PART IN WE RIDE THE WORLD – OUR AUTHORISED DEALERS, CUSTOMERS AND ANYONE ELSE WHO TURNED UP. THIS WASN'T ABOUT WEARING BLACK SHEEP KIT. IT WAS ABOUT COMMUNITY. WE ARE ALL BLACK SHEEP. SEE YOU NEXT YEAR … IF NOT BEFORE
